Planning Shore Excursionspending time on a cruise liner that’s packed with non-stop activities and entertainment can be great.  Just imagine sitting by poolside or dancing the night away in one of the many disco night activities.  However, the other part of cruising, visiting the different ports of call, can be just as exciting.  In fact, for most cruise enthusiasts, going on shore to visit the different exotic locations is the main purpose of the cruise.  These on shore locations or excursions can really make or break a cruise vacation.  So how do you ensure that the on shore portion of your cruise vacation is successful?  Find out by reading our shore excursion tips below.

Find out what’s offered
Find out what shore excursions your cruise line offers by asking your travel agent or going on line and searching the cruise line’s website for details.  Don’t feel obligated to book all the shore excursions that are offered.  Choose the ones that appeal to you.  Keep in mind that you can plan your own shore excursion as well, for sometimes even cheaper prices.  However, you won’t necessarily have the experience or knowledge to choose the best options available.  If you feel intimidated because you don’t know the language or the terrain, then consider booking with the cruise line, even though it might cost a bit more.

Another reason to book with a cruise line is that if you travel on shore on your own and you arrive late to the ship, you might find yourself stranded.  On the other hand, if you take one of the cruise ship’s excursions, the ship won’t depart until the group returns to the dock, even if the group returns later than planned.

Book early
Whether you plan to book with the cruise line, book early. Many of the shore excursions book up fast, especially the more popular ones.  Either ask your travel agent to book it or book it online, even up to a month or two in advance.  If you plan on “going it alone,” don’t wait for the last minute to book you’re shore excursions either.  That’s especially true if you’re taking a cruise during high season and plan on renting a car.
